Match Report: Day Seventeen at the 888.com World Snooker Championship

Higgins holds off brave Selby...

Shot of the day: For a time Mark Selby appeared to be staging the greatest comeback in Crucible final history. He played brilliantly in the afternoon session, and no pot sums up the guts and technique he showed than one in the 20th frame. Higgins played a safety shot but left a long red to the right corner. The shot was risky, and a miss would have given Higgins a great chance to win the frame and ruin Selby’s good start. After much deliberation he decide to go for it, and sweetly sank it on his way to his fourth consecutive frame.

Higgins' Hand On Trophy...

David's Shot of the day: John Higgins improved as the day went on, and his growing confidence was shown with a shot in frame 14.  It was far from won when he ran out of position on the pack of reds.  Instead of playing safe, he used the rest to find a plant into the corner pocket to keep the pressure on and extend his lead.

David's Shot of the day: for a while it looked as though Ronnie O’Sullivan might emulate Shaun Murphy’s stunning comeback.  No shot emphasised his growing confidence better than a pot in the 21st frame.  On frame ball, he used all his cue power to sink a red along the cushion and develop no fewer than four reds.  His break of 93 was ultimately in vain, but the crowd loved it.

David's Shot of the day: In a long tenth frame, Matthew Stevens had Shaun Murphy in trouble with a tricky snooker behind the brown. Murphy plotted a four-cushion escape on to the two remaining reds at the other end of the table, but kept missing. After giving away 28 points in fouls he finally made it with his eighth attempt, to a generous round of applause.
