It’s wide open this year. Ronnie is the favourite but there are a host of players lying in wait to make their own history.
Dott was a 125/1 outsider last year, so what chance on another long-shot triumphing come May 7th? How about an unknown quantity like 17-year-old newcomer Judd Trump, or will experience be the key in the shape of six-time champion Steve Davis at 100/1 or will John Parrott regain his perch from 500/1?
There’s so much to look forward to in the first round. Expect fireworks when Ding meets his Masters nemesis. Local lad and 2005 world champion Murphy will have to hit the ground running when he takes on Trump, and that loveable pair Davis and Parrot will put the couch banter to one side when they fight it out for a place in the final 16.
What about Hendry? The 38-year-old knows better than anyone what it takes to win here, and word has it he’s been practicing hard to claim one more major title after a frustrating spell.
And Williams? He has perhaps lost his way a little but a third win will see him draw level with the great John Spencer. One win could be all the momentum he needs to regain his touch. Then there’s part-time pundit Doherty, the 1997 Champion is after all the current world number two….
And not forgetting no-frills-fave Ebdon, he’s definitely one to watch – a quiet man but a deadly weapon.
What about an overseas player getting his name on the trophy? Only Canadian Cliff Thorburn has done it so far and that was way back in 1980. As well as Ding, there is Australian Neil Robertson, who has already won twice this season, and Marco Fu, who was one frame away from the final last year.
