Anthony Hamilton 6 – 1 Marco Fu
Anthony Hamilton was another seeded player who had a good first day, as he inched his way into a commanding position.
The match was played at a snail’s pace, and the session was cut short by two frames because it risked running into the evening’s play.
Marco Fu made the last four in 2006, but never looked like recapturing that kind of form as Hamilton hit an 84 in the first frame.
The Sheriff of Pottingham added another 80 break in the third, as he built a 5-0 lead. Hong Kong’s Fu was unlucky to lose the fifth when he double kissed the black late on, but regrouped to win the next frame.
Hamilton comfortably won the seventh, and will be hoping for more of the same when the match resumes in day two’s evening session.
