Match Reports: Day One at the 888.com World Snooker Championship

Parrott Takes Interesting Lead

Steve Davis 3 -6 John Parrott

The battle of the pundits made compelling viewing, with John Parrott enjoying the best of opening session.

The 1991 champion played fluently at times, and his 90 break in the first frame gave him confidence.

By contrast, his BBC colleague and six-time world champion looked out of sorts, throwing away three frames in succession.

Parrott struck the highest break of day one with a fantastic 126 in the third frame, and shouted “get in” when he sunk a tricky black from the cushion to pinch the fifth to go 4-1 up.

The world number 43 took the next two to go 6-1 ahead, before Davis finally showed his class with a century in the eighth. The determination that made him one of the game’s greats is still there, and he took the final frame to make it 6-3.

The match is set for an afternoon finish on day two, and the way Davis fought back has changed the balance of the game. If he can carry his momentum and start well, he could yet make the last 16.
