Selby’s Solid Start

Ali Carter 3 – 5 Mark Selby

Mark Selby finished the session strongly to gain an early lead in his quarter-final against Ali Carter.

The majority of the session was plagued by misses, as neither player was able to reproduce the form that saw them reach the last eight. In the previous round Stephen Hendry was well beaten by Ali Carter, and Selby accounted for 2002 champion Peter Ebdon.

It was the first time either player had reached this stage, and both looked nervous early on. It took the best part of an hour for Selby to make the first break over 50, which put him 2-1 up.

The world number 28 was in charge of the fourth, but a miss let in Carter who won the frame with a break of 69.

After the mid-session interval the first two frames were shared with the score at 3-3.

In the seventh frame Selby made a superb 121 break to move ahead and add to the five centuries he hit on Monday.

He was the more assured player throughout the session, and was rewarded by taking the final frame of the session to lead 5-3.

The match is played to a finish on day 12, with sessions in the afternoon and evening.
