Bond’s License Expires

Peter Ebdon 10 – 7 Nigel Bond

Peter Ebdon needed an unplanned third session to see off Nigel Bond in a match for the purists.

Resuming 5-4 down, the 2002 champion started well and regained the lead by taking the first two frames. He had a chance to extend his advantage in the 12th frame but a missed brown cost him dearly as Bond levelled with an excellent 60 break.

Ebdon used all his grit and tactical knowledge to take the next three frames and go 9-6 clear.

Bond, never one to fold easily, briefly threatened a sensational comeback with a 104 in the 16th frame to reduce his arrears to two.

The seven frames took four gruelling hours, and the match was suspended to allow the afternoon matches to begin on time. They returned in the evening, and Ebdon won the first frame of the night to drag himself past the winning post.
