Impressive Ali Carter made two century breaks as part of his dominating campaign over Andy Hicks in the morning session of their first-round clash.
The world number 15 took an early lead in the third frame with a break of 112.
Qualifier Hicks managed to level before the interval but missed many chances in the following frames allowing Carter to increase his lead with breaks of 79 and 129.
Carter continued to dominate the session, winning the next frame.
Trailing 2-5, Hicks wasted five chances to take the eighth frame. He missed an easy blue allowing Carter in to extend his lead.
The winner will face Stephen Hendry in the second round.
