Welsh Open 2007 Qualifying cuef@cts here...

The Welsh Open gets underway in Newport on 12th February and cuef@cts take a look at the recent qualifying rounds to see who is in form coming into the event.

Heavy scoring and break-building has become the key to success in recent years as Ronnie O’Sullivan and Ding Junhui demonstrated in the recent Saga Insurance Masters at Wembley.

The Welsh Open qualifying also had its share of and one name really stands out to cuef@cts.

Ricky Walden – the Englishman based in North Wales made the short trip to Prestatyn and proceeded to make three century breaks in six frames, setting a century-break rate of 2.00, the best we have seen in qualifying all season.

Walden, is gradually living up to his ‘Young Player of Distinction’ billing and on this form looks set to join the Murphy and Maguire as ranking tournament winning YPD’s.

Other impressive performers to look out for in Newport are Royal London Watches Grand Prix runner-up, Jamie Cope, who averaged over 90-points per frame in his final qualifying match and Andrew Higginson who dropped only four frames and will be looking to build on his good form in Malta.

Ian Preece, will also be looking to use his home-advantage as he qualifies for the event for the first time.  The Newport-based player has been improving all season and lost just three frames in as many matches, so could be on the verge of something special in his hometown.
