Rail
The wooden part of the sides of the tables that hold the cushions.
Red ball
Also red(s).
Worth one point each and set in a triangle formation at the start of the frame.
Referee
The person appointed to be in charge of any given match.
Re-rack
The balls being re-set as a result of a “stale-mate” situation.
Re-spot
To return a colour ball to its designated spot on the table.
Re-spotted black
The replacing of the black on its spot, to decide the winner of a drawn game.
Rest
A piece of equipment that enables a player to reach shots that would be impossible using their normal technique.
Reverse side
The application of back and sidespin, having the opposite effect of conventional sidespin on the cue ball when hitting a cushion.
Right
A type of side spin, imparted onto the cue ball by using right of centre striking.
Roll-off
The unnatural path of a ball, possibly due to a playing surface that is not level.
Roll-up
A shot played with little pace, with the aim of snookering the opponent.
Round
A stage of a tournament, e.g. first round, second round.
Round robin
A tournament format in which each players are divided into one or more groups and will play all of the players in the same group at least once.
Run
A term used to describe good or bad luck.
Run-through
A shot in which the cue ball moves forwards after making contact with the object ball. The amount of follow through can be increased by striking higher on the cue ball and increased power.
