The "D"
The area from which the cue ball can be placed when “in hand”. A semi-circular line drawn centrally on the cloth, starting and ending on the baulk line with a radius of 11½ inches.
Dead cushion
A term used when a cushion causes a ball to rebound with less speed than a player would expect.
Deadweight
Describing a shot played at a speed it will just reach its desired target. Mark Williams is regarded as one of the best players of the deadweight shot in the modern game.
Develop
A term used to describe the movement of a ball from a safe position, e.g. “he needs to develop the red in order to continue the break”.
Dish
A slang term for “clearance”.
Double
Describes a shot in which the object ball is potted after it first hits a cushion.
Double hit
A foul shot. The cue tip contacts the cue ball twice during a single shot.
Double kiss
A situation in which a ball strikes another ball which is close to a cushion and the struck ball rebounds back into the ball it was hit by.
Drag shot
A shot played slowly and struck at the bottom of the cue ball imparting backspin. The “drag shot” allows a player to strike the cue ball more positively, achieving greater control than playing the shot with less pace.
Drill
1) A standard routine; repeated practice exercises or technique.
2) A slang term used to describe a heavy defeat; "I drilled my opponent".
